The 2016 Kumamoto Earthquake and JMA’s Multi-hazard Emergency Response - Japan Meteorological Agency

At 21:26 on 14 April 2016 (local time), a magnitude-6.5 earthquake occurred in the Kyushu area of Japan. This was followed by an even larger earthquake with a magnitude of 7.3 at 01:25 on 16 April in the same area. These quakes had the maximum seismic intensity of 7 on the JMA scale, and tremors have continued to occur in the region. JMA issued an Earthquake Early Warning 3.8 seconds after the initial quake and continued to release information as it became available to support coordinated disaster mitigation efforts by relevant governmental organizations.
