After a warm, dry summer with plenty of sunshine, it was unfortunate that high pressure systems only determined the weather for periods of a few days in autumn 2013. A conventional “Indian summer” largely failed to materialise. Instead, mostly low pressure systems brought changeable weather to Germany. Significant weather events were the relatively early and severe first wintry spell in the Alps and the foothills of the Alps on 11 October and, naturally, the windstorm “Christian”, which raged on 28 October with wind speeds as high as 170 km/h, primarily along the North Sea coast.
