World Oceans Day 2019 falls in the middle of the 18th World Meteorological Congress, the World Meteorological Organisation’s major decision making conference held every 4 years held at the Centre International de Conventions in Geneva. This year, oceans feature strongly on the Congress Agenda, as to gender perspectives; so it is an opportunity to weave the World Oceans Day theme throughout the session, raising awareness of inclusive approaches to working with our oceans to WMO’s 193 members.
Key opportunities in the agenda include
-
7th June: The ‘Observations Day’. In the social areas, we will be highlighting women who contribute day in day out to measuring our oceans.
-
8th June: World Oceans Day.
-
11th June: The ‘Research Day’ and a special plenary ‘Ocean Dialogue’ to highlight the importance of ocean efforts to the WMO mission. Speakers will touch on gender aspects in their talks.
-
12th June: The ‘Gender Day’, and another opportunity to highlight the importance of gender inclusive environments for people living and working on, in and by the ocean.
We will be highlighting ‘Gender and the Oceans’ issues in the two weeks of congress on Social media and during Congress:
-
In the first week of Congress and running up to World Oceans Day from the 3-8th June, we will be highlighting women who work in and on our ocean.
-
In the second week of Congress from the 10th-15th June, we will he highlighting gender dimensions of coastal hazards and delivery of coastal services.
