Offenbach, 29 December 2017 – The prevailing westerly wind, which had already dominated in November, also continued in December. This brought generally wet, cold and cloudy weather with frequent precipitation. In the mountains, it fell mainly as snow whereas, in lowland areas, it snowed only occasionally. During the weeks of Advent, this produced a thick blanket of snow in some areas. Christmas then coincided with the arrival of considerably milder air, causing a rapid thaw at altitudes below 1,000 metres. Overall, December was relatively mild, with plenty of pre-cipitation and very little sunshine. This is what the initial analysis by the Deutscher Wetterdienst (DWD) of data from its around 2,000 weather stations shows.
