WMO and 20 partners held a kick-off meeting from 16 to 17 September to launch FOCUS-Africa (Fully Optimized User Centric Climate Services Value Chain for Southern Africa), a four-year € 7 million initiative funded by the European Commission. FOCUS-Africa aims to deliver tailored climate services to increase resilience and adaptation in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) in four key sectors: agriculture and food security, water, energy and infrastructure.

WMO Regional Association (RA) VI (Europe) held its 18 th Session virtually on 20 November with over 227 participants, representing 48 WMO Members and 7 international organizations. RA VI president Dr Michael Staudinger opened the session with a progress report on the achievements since the last session and expressed appreciation for the support provided by the Secretariat despite the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The WMO Hydrological Coordination Panel (HCP) adopted several key decisions and actions in support of the new WMO strategic priority on water at its virtual meeting on 23 to 26 November. A key outcome of the meeting was the agreement to finalize an Action Plan to support the WMO eight long-term ambitions related to operational hydrology in order to address the water challenge before it becomes a crisis.

As 2020 draws to an end, it closes the warmest decade (2011-2020) on record, according to the World Meteorological Organization. This year remains on track to be one of the three warmest on record, and may even rival 2016 as the warmest on record. The six warmest years have all been since 2015.

WMO congratulates all the winners of its 2021 calendar competition for simply outstanding photographs showcasing the theme The Ocean, our climate and weather. More than 1 100 photographs were submitted to the competition, which has become one of WMO’s most popular fixtures. Of these, 70 photographs – in keeping with WMO’s 70th anniversary – were selected for public voting on social media.
