The WMO Commission for Agricultural Meteorology (CAgM) held its quadrennial session from 18 to 20 April in Incheon, Republic of Korea. Hosted by the Korea Meteorological Administration, the focus of the session was on improving weather and climate services for farmers and the agricultural sector in order to boost food security and sustainable development. Discussions centred on balancing the food needs of a growing global population while minimizing the impact of climate change on agriculture and reducing greenhouse emissions from agriculture.

The 5th session of the WMO/IOC Joint Technical Commission for Oceanography and Marine Meteorology (JCOMM-5), held in Geneva in October 2017, established a global network of National Marine Services Focal Points (here after referred to as Focal Points) with the aim of delivering improved marine services for shipping, fishing, recreational boating and coastal activities. This new network aligns with the WMO strategy to develop national capabilities and enhance Members’ status as the authoritative voice on services for mariners and coastal activities.

A conference on the effectiveness and sustainability of investments in weather, climate and hydrological services was hosted at WMO headquarters in Geneva on 21 to 22 March in coordination with the World Bank and its Global Facility for Disaster Reduction and Recovery (GFDRR). The theme – Beyond business as usual – closing the capacity gap – attracted 80 representatives from national meteorological and hydrological services (NMHSs), multilateral development banks and financing and technical institutions.
