Over the past 50 years, (1970-2019), a weather, climate or water-related disaster has occurred on average every day – taking the lives of 115 people and causing US$ 202 million in losses daily.

The number of weather, climate and water related disasters increased five-fold between 1970 and 2019; however, there was a three-fold decrease in deaths from the first decade to the last – this thanks to improved early warning systems (EWSs).

The landmark Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015–2030 clearly references in Target G the importance of the underpinning Early Warning Systems (EWSs) to substantially increase the availability of and access to multi‑hazard early warnings and disaster risk information and assessments to people by 2030.
