WMO welcomed its new Secretary-General, Petteri Taalas, on 1 January. He came to the Organization following a tenure as Director of the Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI) from 2002 to 2015, which was interrupted from 2005 – 2007 when he served as Director of the WMO Development and Regional Activities Department.

Climate change, with rising temperatures and shifts in precipitation patterns, is amplifying the risk of wildfires and prolonging the season.

Air pollution represents a serious environmental problem, causing an estimated seven million premature deaths per year, and seriously impacting economic activities and ecosystems.
