Regional Office for Europe

The Regional Office for Europe is responsible for the coordination of meteorological, hydrological and related activities within Europe (Region VI).  It covers 50 Member States, over 20 of which are countries in transition.  The Regional Office for Europe is headquartered at the World Meteorological Organization in Geneva, Switzerland. 

The main tasks of Regional Office for Europe (ROE) include:

  • Assist the Members of Regional Association VI (Europe)
  • Provide secretarial support to the sessions of the Regional Association VI (RA VI)
  • Assist the RA VI president, the Management Group and other subsidiary bodies
  • Act as interface between the Members and the WMO Departments and Programmes
  • Advise Members on implementation and policy matters
  • Represent WMO at meetings and activities of other relevant regional organizations 
  • Support resource mobilization activities, including the development and execution of capacity building projects

The Regional Office of Europe headquarters is located in Geneva, Switzerland


Regional Training Centres

There are 28 WMO Regional Training Centres, composed of 43 components, providing a diverse portfolio education and training opportunities through residence classes, distance-learning and blended learning.

Former Secretaries-General of WMO

The World Meteorological Organization has had five Secretaries-General since 1952 - Michel Jarraud (1 January 2004 to 31 December 2015), Godwin Olu Patrick Obasi (1 January 1984 to 31 December 2003), Aksel C. Wiin-Nielsen (1 January 1980 to 31 December 1983),  David Arthur Davies (1 January 1956 to 31 December 1979), Gustav Swoboda (1 January 1952 to 31 December 1955).
