Training Programme on Climate Change Adaptation and Disaster Risk Reduction in Agriculture (PACC/RCC)

The organization of courses for experts to develop effective climate services for Climate Change Adaptation and Disaster Risk Reduction. The main objective is to enhance participants' abilities to plan and adopt strategies to mitigate climate and weather impacts, harmonize methods of analysis, and strengthen cooperation in these efforts at a regional level.

• Improving the networking between scientific and technical institutions to develop shared methodologies and to create a shared mechanism of knowledge management. The aim is to expand cooperation in sensitive areas at national and regional levels and to promote increased exchanges and collaboration. The project is intended to develop an open access platform for knowledge and learning resources management and ICT solutions for networking and remote support, supported by a networking event to develop the necessary relationships and create consensus.

The multidisciplinary learning objectives focus on understanding climate change impacts on natural resources and agricultural production, as well as the socio-economical context of these changes. A 50-50 ratio of theoretical knowledge exchange and practical exercises, including direct application through the analysis of case studies will maintain active participation of the trainees in collaborative exercises, further reinforcing interregional partnerships among technicians and scientists.

A blended solution will be adopted for the training, including of pre-workshop distance learning to develop common background knowledge and classroom workshops for more in-depth theoretical content and practical exercises. Training material will be available in both English and French as far as possible. Follow-on activities include sharing the knowledge gained in applications within home institutions, as well as experiences in local training or mentoring.

• Climate Services for disaster prevention (IBIMET-CNR)
• Climate Change impacts: assessment and communication (IBIMET-CNR)
• Agrometeorological Services for irrigation (AGRHYMET)
• Agrometeorological Services for rainfed crops (AGRHYMET)

To enhance the networking of the technical services’ community involved in Climate Change Adaptation and Disaster Risk Reduction, a final networking conference will be organized in Rome, Italy. The conference will gather together those with high-level responsibilities in the Ministries to which the NMHSs belong and the Directors of Meteorological Services. The conference will further promote the strategic collaboration of involved countries with WMO and Italy. The aim of this conference is to enhance technical and scientific cooperation among National Meteorological Services to improve operational climatic services. 

Mentoring, monitoring and support for regional programmes of research and development will begin with shared website to provide access to project documentation and learning materials. Use a variety of remote media, including one-to-one communications, project partners will also extend and leverage the workshops through continued contact with the participants to ensure that they are able to apply the knowledge and skills developed during the workshops when they return to the workplace.
