The Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) provided invaluable weather support for 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics in South Korea. KMA trained over 40 forecasters to produce weather information customized to each stadium using a specialized forecasting system. They had high quality weather and climate data, each venue benefitting from its own high-resolution observation network. The KMA smart weather-support system provided accurate weather predictions that contributed to cost-effective rescheduling of certain sports as well as the successful outdoors opening/closing ceremonies.
The outcomes of ICE-POP 2018 – an international programme endorsed by the Commission for Atmospheric Science (CAS)/WMO – improved the quality of KMA forecasts during the Games. KMA is developing a white paper on the 2018 Winter Olympic Games to help other countries by sharing its challenges, knowledge and expertise.
