On 14 August 2017, the Afghanistan Meteorological Department (AMD) issued its first flood early warning for the country’s south and southeast regions. The following day, meteorological satellite images verified that AMD’s forecast was accurate: a devastating flood had occurred in Khost province.

The Second Pacific Ministerial Meeting on Meteorology has reaffirmed its political will to support sustainable weather, climate, ocean and water services in the region. The meeting was held on 18 August in Honiara, Solomon Islands and attended by 18 government ministers or their representatives, and 170 participants. It was organized by the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP), the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the Government of the Solomon Islands.

Unprecedented rainfall totals from tropical cyclone Harvey caused catastrophic flooding in southeastern Texas and southeastern Louisiana, leaving dozens of casualties, displacing thousands and causing huge economic disruption.
