The 18th Session of the Regional Association I (RAI-18, Africa), held virtually on 18-19 March, focused predominantly on the WMO Reform and established a High-level Task Team to lead the Regional Concept for Regional Associations (RAs). In addition, the session established Committees on Services, Infrastructure and Research and on Capacity Development to align with the new WMO Governance Structure.
The 18th session of the WMO Regional Association for North America, Central America and the Caribbean (RAIV) in February focused on how to improve service delivery, disaster risk reduction and climate resilience in the context of the WMO Reform and the unprecedented situation with the COVID 19 pandemic.

WMO and 20 partners held a kick-off meeting from 16 to 17 September to launch FOCUS-Africa (Fully Optimized User Centric Climate Services Value Chain for Southern Africa), a four-year € 7 million initiative funded by the European Commission. FOCUS-Africa aims to deliver tailored climate services to increase resilience and adaptation in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) in four key sectors: agriculture and food security, water, energy and infrastructure.
This year’s World Meteorological Day on 23 March was devoted to the theme “the ocean, our climate and weather” and was selected to highlight the start of the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021 to 2030).
The International Air Transport Association (IATA) and WMO signed a new agreement on 26 October to increase and improve automated reporting of meteorological data by commercial aircraft in support of weather and forecasting.
WMO Regional Association (RA) VI (Europe) held its 18 th Session virtually on 20 November with over 227 participants, representing 48 WMO Members and 7 international organizations. RA VI president Dr Michael Staudinger opened the session with a progress report on the achievements since the last session and expressed appreciation for the support provided by the Secretariat despite the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The WMO Hydrological Coordination Panel (HCP) adopted several key decisions and actions in support of the new WMO strategic priority on water at its virtual meeting on 23 to 26 November. A key outcome of the meeting was the agreement to finalize an Action Plan to support the WMO eight long-term ambitions related to operational hydrology in order to address the water challenge before it becomes a crisis.
The Systematic Observations Financing Facility (SOFF) held its first Funders Forum on 24 March. The event underscored the rise in support for the Facility, with declarations from leaders of the United Nations and development and climate finance agencies in the Alliance for Hydromet Development, as well as beneficiary countries and the meteorological community. The creation of SOFF is a commitment and priority of the Alliance for Hydromet Development, which is a coalition of major climate and development finance institutions.
