The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, adopted by the United Nations (UN) General Assembly in September 2015, will serve as the centrepiece for national and international policymaking over the next 15 years. It sets out 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) with 169 associated targets and describes a number of international mechanisms for supporting implementation. National Meteorological and Hydrological Services and the broader WMO community can contribute to the SDGs at the national and international levels.

WMO welcomed its new Secretary-General, Petteri Taalas, on 1 January. He came to the Organization following a tenure as Director of the Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI) from 2002 to 2015, which was interrupted from 2005 – 2007 when he served as Director of the WMO Development and Regional Activities Department.

Over the past decades, meteorological and hydrological services have seen a growing participation of the private sector in weather and climate services (WCS) 1 as a result of many interacting factors. Technical developments in observation technology, such as remote-sensing, and reductions in the unit cost of information and measurement equipment, have made observation capacity more affordable and accurate.
