Factoring weather and climate information into agricultural decision-making has optimized agricultural production in many countries. However, in developing countries – where most smallholder farms are rain-fed – access to weather and climate information to guide decision-making is limited. Natural hazards involving weather, climate and water are a major source of death, injury and physical destruction. Over the past decade (2005-2014), 3 253 hydrometeorological hazards were reported around the world, resulting in 283 035 deaths and economic losses amounting to US$ 983 million.

Hydrological conditions in Australia are among the most variable on Earth. Its streamflow regime can go through prolonged periods of droughts such as the “Millennium drought” that occurred between 1997 and 2000 across most parts of eastern Australia. The “Climate Services Adaptation Programme in Africa” is the first multi-agency initiative to be implemented under the Global Framework for Climate Services (GFCS). This flagship programme will help develop user-driven climate services for food security, health and disaster risk reduction in Malawi and Tanzania. The Programme, funded by the Government of Norway, aims to increase the resilience of those most vulnerable to the impacts of weather and climate-related hazards, such as droughts and flooding, and associated health risks, including malnutrition, cholera and malaria.

Coastal populations are growing and development is expanding into higher risk areas such as floodplains and wildlands. Sea level is rising. Over the past 30 years, losses related to geophysical, meteorological, hydrological and climatological events over the past 30 years have risen three to fourfold in the United States.
