Human activity has increased the direct warming effect of carbon dioxide (CO₂) in the atmosphere by 50 percent above pre-industrial levels during the past 25 years, according to NOAA's 10th Annual Greenhouse Gas Index . In 2015, the global average CO₂ concentration reached 399 parts per million, increasing by a record amount of almost 3 ppm. From the end of the Ice Age to the beginning of the industrial era, atmospheric carbon dioxide remained remarkably stable at 278 ppm.

The World Meteorological Organization wants to strengthen working relationships and partnerships with the United Nations Environment Programme and intensify mutual support on issues such as monitoring of air quality and greenhouse gas concentrations, and climate change mitigation and adaptation. WMO Secretary-General Petteri Taalas discussed enhanced collaboration with incoming UNEP Executive Director Erik Stolheim during the UN Environment Assembly talking place in Nairobi, Kenya.

A new, improved version of the World Meteorological Organization World Weather Information Service (WWIS) website has been launched. It is enhanced with more content, including current weather, times of sunrise and sunset for world cities, as well as global satellite imagery. It also features a new user interface and more responsive web design that provides a better search and browsing experience.

The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) is undertaking a global review of Regional Climate Outlook Forums (RCOFs) which make seasonal predictions of rainfall and temperatures on regional and help national planning in key sectors like agriculture, health, energy and water management. The review workshop will determine how to improve the process of creating, interpreting and disseminating regional climate outlooks to better serve the needs of society. It takes place at the International Research Centre on El Niño in Guayaquil, Ecuador from 5-7 September 2017.

Recognizing that expanded and improved observations now make possible a broader assessment of global atmospheric chemistry, the WMO Global Atmosphere Watch programme has published a new report on global and regional trends in reactive gases. This group of gases includes such chemicals as surface ozone, nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, and volatile organic compounds, many of which are considered to be harmful pollutants. The heads of the World Health Organization (WHO), UN Environment and World Meteorological Organization (WMO) have launched a new global coalition on health, environment and climate change. One of its overall goals is to reduce the annual 12.6 million deaths caused by environmental risks, and especially air pollution.
