The African Drought Conference (ADC) on "Enhancing resilience to drought events on the African continent" concluded today in Windhoek, Namibia, after adopting the Windhoek Declaration. The conference built on COP-11 of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification, which was held in September 2013. It also served as a follow-up, in many ways, to the High-Level Meeting on National Drought Policies that WMO held in March 2013 in Geneva.

The Republic of Vanuatu has created its Framework for Climate Services, making it the first Pacific Island nation to reach this milestone. The successful provision of climate information and services is a challenge for many Pacific Island nations, which may be hindered by social, financial and infrastructure issues. Vanuatu faces such realities, compounded by resource constraints, significant geographic isolation between and within its more than 80 islands, and over 80% of its population living in rural areas.

Global temperature records were broken yet again in April for the 12th consecutive month, the longest such streak in the 137-year record of the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA ). Overall, 13 out of the 15 highest monthly temperature departures in the record have all occurred since February 2015. NOAA said the combined average temperature over global land and ocean surfaces for April 2016 was 1.10°C (1.98°F) above the 20th century average of 13.7°C (56.7°F) - the highest temperature departure for April since global records began in 1880.
