WMO Secretary-General Petteri Taalas met the new director-general of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus to discuss strengthening cooperation on issues relating to health, environment and climate change. The meeting focused on expanded WHO-WMO collaboration on three key areas: support to climate adaptation with the expanded use of climate services and early warning for health; air quality, and vector borne diseases.

WMO has held talks and entered into a new working arrangement with the International Air Transport Association (IATA) on the operation of the global Aircraft Meteorological DAta Relay (AMDAR) system. WMO Secretary-General Petteri Taalas met IATA Director General Alexandre de Juniac to discuss how IATA’s 265 airlines in over 117 countries can best contribute to AMDAR’s data gathering system.

The UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the World Meteorological Organization have signed a memorandum of understanding to deepen cooperation to respond to climate variability and climate change, which, according to the agreement, "represents an urgent and potentially irreversible threat to human societies, natural ecosystems and food security." The second session of the Council of Arab Ministers for Meteorology and Climate Affairs took place on 26 April, with a focus on boosting the effectiveness and capacity of meteorological services. Discussions included aeronautical meteorological services, weather and climate risk management, training and capacity building, the fledgling Arab Climate Outlook Forum, and sand and dust storm warning services.

A pathway to increase the effectiveness and sustainability of investments in weather, climate and hydrological services has been adopted at a conference convened by the World Meteorological Organization, the World Bank and the Global Facility for Disaster Reduction and Recovery (GFDRR). The central theme of the conference on 21-22 March was “Beyond business as usual – closing the capacity gap.” It brought together 100 representatives from national meteorological and hydrological services, multilateral development banks and financing and technical institutions.

Météo France International will help develop the capacity of Haiti’s national meteorological and hydrological service under a new contract signed with the World Meteorological Organization. The agreement is part of a wider international drive spearheaded by WMO and funded by Environment and Climate Change Canada to rehabilitate Haiti’s meteorological and hydrological service, destroyed in the 2010 earthquake, and reduce the extreme vulnerability to natural hazards such as tropical cyclones through better weather forecasts and climate services.

WMO spotlight on oceans and climate, research, observations and safety World Oceans Day celebrates the central role of the oceans in our lives. It also seeks to sensitize people about the impact of human actions and encourage action to protect the oceans and preserve marine life and precious ecosystems. The focus for 2018 is stopping plastic pollution and encouraging solutions for a healthy ocean.
