WMO has issued its annual Airborne Dust Bulletin on the incidence and hazards of sand and dust storms in 2020. The impacts on health, the environment and economies have been highlighted once again this year as massive sand plumes have darkened skies and affected air quality in many parts of Africa, Asia, the Americas and Europe and travelled hundreds of miles over the Atlantic.

A major intrusion of sand and dust from the Sahara transformed skies and the landscape over Europe on the weekend of 6-7 February, with far-reaching impacts for the environment and health. It once again highlighted the importance of accurate forecasts and warnings of this transboundary hazard.

The Republic Hydrometeorological Service of Serbia (RHMSS), a partner in the WMO Sand and Dust Storm Warning Advisory and Assessment System (SDS-WAS), has numerically simulated an Australian dust storm event using DREAM dust model. The simulation was part of WMO SDS-WAS initiative to include dust impacts to high latitudes in its research agenda.
