The WMO Commission for Basic Systems (CBS) is holding a special technical conference to brainstorm on future directions on data, infrastructure and service issues. The World Meteorological Organization has appointed Pavel Kabat as its first chief scientist and research director. He will lead the overall strategic direction of the WMO science, and its underlying research activities, including the World Climate Research Programme, the World Weather Research Programme and WMO’s Global Atmosphere Watch, which monitors greenhouse gas concentrations, air quality and the ozone layer.

Robert Varley, Chief Executive of the Met Office in the United Kingdom, has been elected First Vice-President of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). Mr Varley is the UK’s Permanent Representative to WMO, and a member of the WMO Executive Council.

Geneva, 20 June 2018 - The World Meteorological Organization’s Executive Council holds its annual session from 20-29 June, with a focus on addressing high-impact weather, climate change and environmental challenges. It will also discuss evolving relationships with the rapidly growing private sector, as well as observations, satellites and data exchange. There will be a special one-day dialogue on water.
