An Arctic summer special observing period is taking place from 1 July to 30 September as part of the Year of Polar Prediction (YOPP). Extensive extra observations will be carried out at numerous land stations in the Arctic as part of field campaigns and expeditions, and by autonomous instruments. Numerical experimentation and internationally coordinated verification activities will use the additional observations for forecast evaluation and observational impact studies.

Arctic sea ice has probably reached its annual minimum for 2018, according to the National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC). Sea ice extent dipped to 1.77 million square miles (4.59 million square kilometers) on September 19, and again on September 23. After that, ice extent began to rise, signalling an end to the summer melt season.

The Ministry of Environment, Natural Resource Conservation and Tourism of Botswana has presented an award to the Department of Meteorological Services national data-rescue team in recognition of its outstanding work on imaging and digitizing old weather records. To date the team has imaged some 40 000 documents and digitized and quality checked 500 documents. The rescue of these invaluable data will assist scientists studying long-term climate trends in the region and empower national climate services to deliver more useful information and predictions.

Thanks to the HimawariCast project led by WMO and the Japan Meteorological Agency, 14 countries in the Asia-Pacific can now access vital meteorological data from the Himawari-8 satellite. The project is sending teams to each of the countries to provide technical assistance for obtaining and using the data. The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) is undertaking a global review of Regional Climate Outlook Forums (RCOFs) which make seasonal predictions of rainfall and temperatures on regional and help national planning in key sectors like agriculture, health, energy and water management. The review workshop will determine how to improve the process of creating, interpreting and disseminating regional climate outlooks to better serve the needs of society. It is enhanced with more content, including current weather, times of sunrise and sunset for world cities, as well as global satellite imagery. It also features a new user interface and more responsive web design that provides a better search and browsing experience.
