The Arctic Winter Special Observing Period (SOP1) of the Year of Polar Prediction* (YOPP) commenced on 1 February 2018. WMO looks forward to the extensive extra observations to be conducted by the YOPP community at numerous Arctic stations, as a part of YOPP-endorsed field campaigns, and by autonomous instruments. A World Meteorological Organization committee of experts has announced the results of a new evaluation involving the highest temperature recorded in the Antarctic continent as part of continuing efforts to maintain the accuracy of a database of extreme weather and climate conditions throughout the world.

The science community is concerned: many established researchers plan to retire in the coming decade and there is a dearth of early and mid-career researchers ready to take their place and contribute in a meaningful way. The United States has launched the first of its new generation of highly advanced polar-orbiting meteorological satellites. Known as JPSS-1 (for Joint Polar Satellite System), the new satellite is the first in a series of missions that the US is contributing to the space-based component of the WMO Integrated Global Observing System (WIGOS) through to 2038.
Through its Technical Commission, Programmes and Regional Offices as well as by synergistic partnerships, WMO facilitates the maintenance and expansion of its Members' atmospheric, oceanographic and land-based observational networks; the free unrestricted exchange of the resulting data and information; and related capacity development and research in order to optimize the production weather, climate and water-related services worldwide.
