The space-based observing system is making essential contributions to the generation of weather, water and climate-related products and services and helps support policy- and decision making. The number of operational satellites that are part of this space-based observing system and their capabilities is growing, and a considerable number of satellites with new capabilities that are presently in the planning stage will soon join the system.

The Arctic Winter Special Observing Period (SOP1) of the Year of Polar Prediction* (YOPP) commenced on 1 February 2018. A World Meteorological Organization committee of experts has announced the results of a new evaluation involving the highest temperature recorded in the Antarctic continent as part of continuing efforts to maintain the accuracy of a database of extreme weather and climate conditions throughout the world.

Seven new generation geostationary satellites will be launched into positions over the equator within the next five years. The science community is concerned: many established researchers plan to retire in the coming decade and there is a dearth of early and mid-career researchers ready to take their place and contribute in a meaningful way. Unless young scientists are encouraged, trained and mentored in various scientific fields knowledge gaps will occur.

Thanks to the HimawariCast project led by WMO and the Japan Meteorological Agency, 14 countries in the Asia-Pacific can now access vital meteorological data from the Himawari-8 satellite. The project is sending teams to each of the countries to provide technical assistance for obtaining and using the data.
