Florence and Michael won’t have another chance to wreak havoc in the Atlantic Basin. The names of these two storms, which caused extensive fatalities and damage from Florida north to Virginia last year, have been retired by the World Meteorological Organization’s Region IV Hurricane Committee.

Tropical Cyclone Idai made landfall on 14 March at 23.30 GMT, close to Beira City in Mozambique. Heavy rainfall, strong winds (above 150 km/h) and storm surge estimated at 2.5m height affected the region. Initial reports indicate there may be hundreds of deaths, and hundreds of thousands of people impacted in Mozambique, Malawi and Zimbabwe.

An initiative to strengthen multi-hazard early warning systems in the Caribbean was launched on November 20 during the dry season Caribbean Climate Forum (CariCOF) meeting in Barbados. The Caribbean region is highly exposed to high-impact hydrometeorological hazards such as hurricanes and tropical storms, causing floods, landslides and storm surge. A World Meteorological Organization expert committee has established a new world record significant wave height of 19 meters (62.3 feet) measured by a buoy in the North Atlantic. The wave was recorded by an automated buoy at 0600 UTC on 4 February 2013 in the North Atlantic ocean between Iceland and the United Kingdom (approximately 59° N, 11° W). It followed the passage of a very strong cold front, which produced winds of up to 43.8 knots (50.4 miles per hour) over the area.

The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has released its new, long-awaited, digitized International Cloud Atlas – the global reference for observing and identifying clouds, which are an essential part of weather, the climate system and the water cycle. It was released for World Meteorological Day on 23rd March.
