The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has signed a host country agreement with the Government of Nigeria for the WMO Sub-Regional Office for North Central and West Africa in Abuja. WMO is boosting its regional presence in order to improve services to Members, and strengthen relationships with development partners. WMO also has a sub-regional office in Nairobi, Kenya, for Eastern and Southern Africa. The WMO Regional office for Africa will be moved from Geneva to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, in early 2019.

WMO has issued its annual report for 2017: Services for Decision-Making. The report, issued during the Executive Council meeting, focuses on the knowledge-base, information for decision-making, supporting sustainable development, and also looks at WMO’s budgets, staffing and structure.

Robert Varley, Chief Executive of the Met Office in the United Kingdom, has been elected First Vice-President of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). Mr Varley is the UK’s Permanent Representative to WMO, and a member of the WMO Executive Council.
