A new research project spearheaded by MetService’s oceanography division, MetOcean Solutions will shed new light on the performance of New Zealand’s oceans to support the seafood sector. The Moana Project was today awarded $11.5 million over five years from the Government’s Endeavour Fund. MetService Chief Executive Officer Peter Lennox says the grant is an endorsement of the capability and expertise that exists within MetService, and the contribution the State-owned enterprise is continuing to make in advancing the knowledge of New Zealand industry and communities.

Two of the most dangerous tropical cyclones this year have made landfall, with devastating impacts. Hurricane Florence caused life-threatening storm surge, torrential rainfall and flooding to the southeast coast of USA. Typhoon Mangkhut in the western North Pacific, the most intense tropical cyclone this year, brought the equivalent of category 5 winds to the northern Philippines.
This restructuring of the Organization will enhance proactive regional engagement and capacity development. In our response to the growing global demand for weather, climate and water expertise, the reform provisions assure that no Member is left behind. Below are the Terms of Reference for the new entities that EC recommended to Congress as well as the amendments recommended to the Terms of Reference of Regional Associations.
Members of the World Meteorological Organization have committed to a governance reform in order to better respond to the growing global demand for weather, climate and water expertise. WMO is not alone, the United Nations is on a similar path. Members want better governance, efficiency gains and improved effectiveness throughout the UN system in order to optimize the use of limited resources.

“Keep Cool and Carry on” is the theme of this year’s International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer. It celebrates the progress in protecting the ozone layer and moves to phase out ozone depleting chemicals which are also potent greenhouse gases.
In addition to visualizing the emergence of meningitis cases in Africa and in Niger Health Districts, the vigilance maps produced by the African Centre of Meteorological Applications for Development (ACMAD) also show how twinning activities are serving as an efficient means for building capacity at and transferring knowledge between global, regional and national levels.
In the central Andean high plateau, farmers in Peru’s Puno region are taking part in a pilot experiment entitled Talleres Climáticos de Campo – TCC (Rural Climate Workshops), in which climate data and communications from the regional office of the National Meteorology and Hydrology Service of Peru (SENAMHI) are used to manage their risks.
