This side event will showcase the WMO Coordination Mechanism (WCM) and the value added of this partnership framework to turn early warnings into early actions, and thus, to effectively reduce disaster risk and humanitarian need.

The WCM supports the Early Warnings for All initiative in its ambitious goal to protect everyone with early warnings by 2027. Alongside improvement in early warning, risk information, communication and capacities of organizations to response, an enhanced coordination to leverage the best knowledge and expertise are required to enable humanitarian organizations to translate early warning into early action.

Through combining a short simulation experience on decision making based on forecast, presentation of a case study and discussion with the audience, this side event will provide the WMO Coordination Mechanism the opportunity to inform on its offers and share best practices while engaging scientists, practitioners and policymakers to explore new ways to better protect people at risk to coordination and collaboration.

The example of TC Mocha will be presented, where global, regional, national, and local actors came together to act on early warnings and avoid negative impacts on the largest refugee community in Asia, specifically in Cox Bazar and Bhasan Char, who were exposed and very vulnerable to the hazard.

The discussion will focus on how to replicate and scale up the success of risk-informed anticipatory action for TC Mocha for other hazards, geographies, and users.
