Overall a cold March – snow again in the north and east

Offenbach, 29 March 2018 – At the start of the month, Germany was under the influence of a generally dry but very cold easterly flow. Hardly any low pressure systems arrived from the Atlantic in the west. The start of the second third of the month temporarily showed some tentative signs of spring before a high pressure system moving south from the Arctic again brought very wintry conditions on an icy north-easterly wind. During the last ten days of the month, the high pressure moved away and was replaced by low pressure areas bringing milder, moister air from the west. Overall, March was cold and somewhat too dry with al-most balanced sunshine. This is what the initial analysis by the Deutscher Wetterdienst (DWD) of data from its around 2,000 weather stations shows.
