WMO Gender Networks
WMO is dedicated to integrating gender mainstreaming into its governance, operational structures, programs, and service delivery, as well as fostering employment opportunities in the fields of science and meteorology to promote diversity and inclusion.
WMO Secretariat Gender Focal Point Network
The WMO Gender Equality Policy is operationalized through the WMO Gender Action Plan (GAP) which identifies concrete actions for all parts of the Organization (Secretariat, constituent bodies, Members). The Action Plan is reviewed every four years, progress in implementation measured and priority actions for the following four years identified.
The WMO GAP is implemented through an internal Gender Focal Point (GFP) Network established by the WMO Secretariat in 2024. The GFP Network consists of over 30 staff members from each Department and Regional Office and is coordinated by the WMO Gender Focal Point Coordinator.
The Focal Point Network aims to further define and achieve the WMO Gender Equality objectives:
- To foster an enabling environment that embraces equality, eradicates bias in the workplace, and is inclusive of all staff.
- To mainstream gender and diversity into our flagship initiatives and projects.
- To support our WMO Members with gender, diversity and inclusion issues.
Upcoming Gender Focal Point Network across WMO Governing Bodies
The WMO Secretariat is undertaking important steps to establish a network of Gender Focal Points across its Members and Constituent Bodies, in line with its Gender Action Plan.
The WMO Secretariat is in the process of developing an upcoming online Community of Practice platform and Collaboration Hub to support the emerging Gender Focal Point Network, which will serve as key tools to strengthen communication and consolidate knowledge on gender mainstreaming across the organization.
These initiatives will be led by Dr. Cécile Siewe, the WMO Executive Council Gender Focal Point and Permanent Representative of Canada to WMO. Under Dr. Siewe's leadership, the network will be instrumental in bringing together diverse experiences, promoting mentorship opportunities for young women scientists, reinforcing capacity-building initiatives, and raising awareness of gender equality throughout all WMO Regions and governance structures.
