Open Call: Early to Mid-Career Professionals for the WMO Scientific Advisory Panel (SAP)

09 October 2025

The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) invites applications from early to mid-career professionals to join its Scientific Advisory Panel (SAP) — a body that provides forward-looking scientific and strategic advice on emerging challenges and opportunities related to weather, climate, water, and related environmental and social sciences.

Share:

The SAP advises the WMO Congress and Executive Council on scientific and technological matters, supports long-term planning, and promotes WMO’s global scientific vision. It is composed of up to 15 independent, internationally recognized experts representing a balance of regions, genders, and sectors, including academia, research institutions, the private sector, and user communities.

Currently, two positions are open. To strengthen the Panel’s diversity and next-generation perspectives, WMO seeks early to mid-career applicants with expertise in any field relevant to the SAP’s mandate, especially in the following priority areas:

  1. Tipping points, unprecedented events, and irreversibilities in the climate system
  2. Big data for addressing global environmental challenges
  3. Artificial intelligence for seamless numerical weather–climate prediction and insights across the value cycle

Who Should Apply

WMO encourages applications from:

  • Early to mid-career scientists and professionals — active researchers up to 12 years after receiving their PhD (excluding parental and care leave)
  • Experts from the private sector
  • Individuals from under-represented communities and regions, including South America, Africa, and the Pacific, as well as women and minorities

Member Expectations

SAP members:

  • Serve in a voluntary capacity (this is an unpaid position)
  • Contribute actively to SAP work and meetings
  • Attend one annual in-person session (travel support may be available, subject to funds)
  • Participate in virtual sessions as needed
  • Serve in a personal, expert capacity (not as representatives of organizations or governments)

Applicants should submit:

  • A curriculum vitae (CV) in English (education, experience, skills, and contact details)
  • A one-page letter of motivation in English describing their expected contributions to SAP
  • Send application materials or inquiries to Ms. Lauren Stuart, WMO Scientific Officer, at lstuartatwmo [dot] int (lstuart[at]wmo[dot]int), by 26 November 2025 at 18:00 CET.
