Linguistic Resources

The United Nations General Assembly (A/RES/78/330) recognizes multilingualism as a core value of the Organization.

As a specialized agency of the United Nations, WMO operates in six official languages (Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish) to facilitate participation by Members and effective dissemination of scientific and technical information in the Organization's areas of expertise in all official languages.

Key Resources

To support high-quality multilingual work, WMO maintains a number of linguistic resources, such as:

  • METEOTERM – WMO's multilingual terminology database and the official reference for technical and scientific terms and abbreviations;
  • WMO Writing and Style Guide – Editorial standards and guidance for clear, consistent communication;
  • WMO Citation Style Guide – Standards for referencing, citations and bibliographic formatting across WMO publications;
  • WMO Spelling List – Preferred spellings and capitalization for commonly used terms in WMO documents and communications.
