In its conclusions on Research and Systematic Observation (RSO) at COP 29, the Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA) sixty-one (61) recognized the existence of data gaps across various environmental systems, including the atmosphere, hydrosphere (oceans and coastal regions), cryosphere, biosphere, deserts, and mountainous regions.

The WMO submission presents views on the possible themes for the seventeenth (17th) meeting of the research dialogue, which will be held in conjunction with SBSTA 62 in Bonn, Germany, from 16 to 26 June 2025 responding to the SBSTA 61 call for updates on cryosphere monitoring and modalities to address gaps in data availability, particularly in high-mountain and polar regions.
