Eoin Moran

Eoin Moran was elected Second Vice-President of WMO by the Nineteenth World Meteorological Congress in 2023 for a four-year term beginning immediately after the closure of the Congress-19. This is his first term as Second Vice-President of WMO.

Eoin Moran has been the Director of Met Éireann since 2016 and has led Ireland’s representation to several international meteorological organizations, consortia, and cooperative networks, including as:

  • Chair of the EUMETSAT Council (2022 - present)
  • Chair of ECMWF Policy Advisory Committee (PACT) (2019 - present)
  • Permanent Representative of Ireland to the World Meteorological Organization (2016 - present)
  • Chair of EUMETNET Scientific and Technical Advisory Committee (STAC) (2015 - 2019)
  • Member of Ireland’s Climate Change Advisory Council (2021 - present)

As Director of Met Éireann, he has also led several national initiatives in Ireland including:

  • Establishment of Ireland’s National Framework for Climate Services (NFCS)
  • Establishment of the Met Éireann Weather and Climate Research Programme
  • Co-founder of the United Weather Centres West (UWC-west) HPC and operational NWP cooperative in partnership with the Directors of DMI, the IMO and KNMI in 2018
  • Establishment of the National Flood Forecasting Centre in Met Éireann in 2017
  • Developed the Making Ireland Weather and Climate Prepared 2017-2027 strategic plan for Met Éireann in 2017.
