Global Processes and Water Policy

Inform

WMO engages in global processes and informs water policy development. The aim is to increase the understanding of the value hydrological data, information and services add to sustainable development by Member States’ ministries and governments, international partner organizations, and other relevant public, private, and academic institutions. WMO informs policy development through intergovernmental processes, such as the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Scope

WMO engages through multiple initiatives:

UN-Water: membership and co-coordination of the UN-Water Expert Group on Water and Climate Change (with UNESCO and UNECE)
Water Action Agenda: commitments and support to the follow-up of the UN 2023 Water Conference
Action for Water Adaptation and Resilience (AWARe) Initiative: hosting the global coordination office and co-leading the implementation of the work stream on improved early warning systems for extreme weather events and prolonged droughts
International Year of Glaciers’ Preservation 2025 and the observance of the World Day for Glaciers: WMO and UNESCO, in cooperation with Governments and relevant organizations facilitate the implementation of global and regional water policy events: contribution of expertise and knowledge
UN system water policy projects: support through WMO data and expertise
Water and Climate Coalition: hosting the secretariat of the coalition
