Project background
CAPA strengthens climate research, services and climate-risk reduction across Africa by bringing together African and European scientists, funders, climate-service providers, policymakers and communities. The project integrates scientific, local and Indigenous knowledge and addresses priority sectors including disaster risk reduction, water, agriculture and health. It aims to better coordinate fragmented climate initiatives, strengthen human and institutional capacities, and support the use of innovative approaches, including AI and multi-hazard early warning systems.
Objective(s)
CAPA aims to strengthen African climate science and climate services and establish a sustainable AU-EU partnership for climate-risk reduction and resilience. It will connect existing African and European networks, consolidate scientific and local knowledge, identify user needs and research gaps, strengthen capacities, and improve the translation of climate knowledge into operational services and decision-making.
Outputs
Key outputs will include an updated AU–EU Climate Pillar roadmap, a mapping and synthesis of African climate research, services, and capacity-development initiatives, as well as recommendations and priorities for future research and funding. Additional outputs will include curated climate-service tools, datasets, and training resources, capacity-development activities, and regional flagship actions to advance climate knowledge, innovation and services.
Expected outcomes
CAPA is expected to strengthen the international recognition of African climate science, improve climate services and their uptake, strengthen education and capacity across African regions, enhance coordination of climate research funding, and support climate-informed policies and adaptation planning. It will also promote regional flagship actions and strengthen long-term African-European cooperation on climate resilience.
