Mongolia Expands International Exchange of Meteorological Observations to All National Observation Stations
The National Agency for Meteorology and Environmental Monitoring (NAMEM) of Mongolia has commenced the full-scale international exchange of its meteorological observational data. Previously, Mongolia disseminated observations from 63 synoptic stations at three-hour intervals through the Regional Telecommunication Hubs (RTHs) in Beijing and Novosibirsk. This number has now more than doubled, with observational data from a total of 138 stations being exchanged internationally through the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Integrated Global Observing System (WIGOS) OSCAR/Surface platform.
This milestone represents an important contribution to the implementation of the WMO Unified Data Policy and its principles of open, free, and unrestricted exchange of meteorological, hydrological, and climate-related data. It also strengthens Mongolia’s participation in maintaining the sustainability and effectiveness of both regional and global observing networks.
The expanded coverage of observational data is expected to improve the accuracy and quality of weather, water, and climate forecasts, information services, and products, while enhancing the quality and availability of data used in regional and global numerical modelling systems. As a result, NAMEM will be able to provide more reliable and higher-quality weather, water, climate, and environmental services of critical importance to the public, supporting socio-economic development and disaster risk reduction across the country.
