Statement by Dr. Abdulla Al Mandous, President of WMO, on the occasion of awarding the IMO Prize to Prof. Dr. Gerhard Adrian

19 Июня 2025

Excellencies, distinguished colleagues, dear friends,

It is both an honour and a pleasure to open this ceremony for the awarding of the International Meteorological Organization (IMO) Prize, the highest scientific distinction bestowed by the World Meteorological Organization.

The IMO Prize stands as a symbol of excellence, commitment, and scientific leadership in meteorology, hydrology, and related fields. Since its establishment in 1955, the Prize has honoured individuals whose work has profoundly shaped our science, and, by doing so, has contributed to saving lives, building resilience, and deepening global cooperation.

It is not just a medal or a title. The IMO Prize is the recognition of a lifetime of dedication. This year, the IMO Prize is awarded to Professor Dr. Gerhard Adrian, whose leadership and scientific legacy represent the very values this award was created to celebrate. While Secretary-General Saulo will shortly speak to his specific achievements and the human qualities that make Gerhard’s career so remarkable, allow me—on behalf of the WMO and all its Members—to underscore the significance of this moment.

Gerhard Adrian joins an illustrious line of recipients. The IMO Prize is not simply a recognition of past accomplishments—it is a reaffirmation of the ideals that guide our work: scientific integrity, multilateral cooperation, and service to society.

Each laureate of this prize reminds us that science, when practiced with purpose and humility, can be a unifying force. Gerhard's name will now stand alongside those who have laid the very foundations of modern meteorology. And through this award, we reaffirm our collective aspiration to advance science in the service of humanity.

Let me end by expressing our sincere admiration and gratitude. Congratulations, Professor Adrian.

You have made the WMO—and the world—better through your dedication and example.

Shukran
