SERCOM & gender action
WMO is committed to advancing gender equality in all its activities - including those of the Technical Commissions - to promote equitable delivery of meteorological and hydrological services, ensuring that no one is left behind and everyone globally benefits from weather, water, and climate information. This commitment directly supports WMO’s Strategic Goal on inclusive and equitable access to services, a cornerstone of the WMO Strategic Plan 2024–2027.
SERCOM Gender Action Plan
The SERCOM Gender Action Plan aims to promote and facilitate gender equality across WMO, and to track progress through measurable outcomes. The plan, aligned with the WMO Strategic Plan and the WMO Gender Action Plan 2024–2027, foresees the following five priority areas:
- Diverse governance: Achieving 40% representation of women in WMO bodies and sessions, with a 50% gender equity long-term goal. This supports WMO’s goal of strengthening governance through inclusivity and representation.
- Gender mainstreaming in planning: Integrating gender objectives in all strategies and policies, using gender-disaggregated data to track progress. This contributes to WMO’s goal of ensuring services meet the needs of all communities, in line with the Early Warnings for All initiative.
- Capacity and leadership development: Offering annual training, mentoring, and networking to strengthen women’s leadership and participation. This aligns with WMO’s strategic focus on capacity development and empowering the next generation of leaders.
- Gender-responsive services: Ensuring weather, climate, and environmental services are inclusive and accessible to all users. This advances WMO’s goal of enhancing resilience and adaptation by ensuring services reach those most at risk, particularly women and vulnerable groups.
- Visibility and partnerships: Highlighting women’s contributions through awards, events, and global gender networks to promote equity. This contributes to WMO’s goal of strengthening partnerships and raising visibility to accelerate progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals, especially SDG 5 on gender equality.
