WWRP SSC Member Dr. Atul Kumar Sahai Appointed President of the Indian Meteorological Society

The World Weather Research Programme (WWRP) is delighted to announce that Dr. Atul Kumar Sahai, a member of its Scientific Steering Committee (SSC), has been appointed President of the Indian Meteorological Society (IMS).

Dr. Sahai is a highly accomplished climate scientist, having served as the Head of Climate Research and Services at the India Meteorological Department (IMD) in Pune, where he also coordinates major national and international research initiatives. He has published more than 150 peer-reviewed research papers and multiple book chapters, contributing significantly to climate modelling, monsoon prediction, and climate change studies. His scientific excellence has been recognised through numerous awards, including the Golden Jubilee Award and merit recognitions from the Ministry of Earth Sciences. He has also held prestigious international visiting fellowships in Korea, the United States, and Brazil, reflecting the global reach and impact of his research.


The Indian Meteorological Society, of which Dr. Sahai now assumes the presidency, is a nonprofit scientific organization dedicated to the advancement of meteorological and allied sciences, the dissemination of knowledge among the scientific community and the general public, and the promotion of meteorology's application to constructive human activities, spanning agriculture, irrigation, power development, air and sea navigation, engineering, technology, and public health.


In his vision for the IMS, Dr. Sahai has expressed his commitment to harnessing the collective expertise of senior scientists, retired members, and the next generation of young researchers to position India as a world leader in weather and climate services, thereby building on the invaluable work of the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
