Over the past decade, the HIWeather project under the World Weather Research Programme has helped shift weather forecasting from a narrow focus on accuracy to a broader, interdisciplinary approach that considers the full warning chain and its effectiveness in reducing harm. It has fostered collaboration between social and physical sciences, building a passionate community committed to improving weather-related warnings.

HIWeather’s concept of “Warning Chain Thinking” highlights the importance of partnerships across disciplines, organizations, and end users. Its key publication, Towards the Perfect Weather Warning, along with WMO guides and research papers, now informs education, training, and operational practice worldwide. The project also laid the groundwork for the UN’s Early Warnings for All initiative and future research efforts.
